THE CRAZE OF AMBIGRAMS

Its my 2nd post on ambigrams.

I know, but the topic is also becoming more popular these days.

And this post is dedicated to my friend Harry from Sydney, Australia.

I was stumbled to receive a mail from hin a week ago asking me to create an ambigram for him which he wanted to tattoo on his chest. I made it for him and mailed him. He also liked it.

Dear readers, we all are living in the golden era of computers & gadgets. In this dynamic world, one must be updated with current knowledge & must be able to upgrade himself with the changing global scenario.

B for Blog – Blog is a truncation of the word ‘web log’ (diary on Internet) It is a form of web diary; you can write & share with your friend, circles & public. The person writing a blog is a blogger & every article in a blog is a Blog-post. All the Blog posts in a blog are arranged in a reverse chronological order, such that fresh post remains at the top of the page.

Before Blogging – (Blog Vs Website) Blogs are like websites, but both are not the same. Creating a website requires lot of technical skills, knowledge of computer languages like HTML. But blogs are very simple to create & maintain. Basic computer knowledge is enough to get started with your blog & if you are a good programmer, then you can also customize your blog using HTML (As per your choice)

So anybody with basic computer knowledge can easily startup with a blog without much technical skills.

TEXTURE DRAWING

When I was in 8th and 9th standard we had drawing competitive [drawing elementary & intermediate] exams of Maharashtra State Government, (India). That time we had some texture drawing techniques in our syllabus. So I learnt some of the techniques from Subodh Narvekar’s Book for Elementary & Intermediate Drawing Exams (Navneet Publications, Maharashtra, India).

The Book is really awesome and is available in almost all stationary and book stores in Maharashtra. Sadly I don’t know about the availability of that book outside Maharashtra.

Following are some techniques out of which some I have learnt from the book and others are my own.



Atching: Apply a thick layer of paint on the paper & create designs using a needle or any pointed thing before the paint dries.
Also Try Night Atching: 1) Draw & color picture with colour pencil 2) Cover whole picture with Black wax crayon 3) Use atching technique on this surface.

Stippling: Give a light wash colour on the paper & let it dry. Meanwhile, make the dark & thick shade of the same colour/ the contrast colour. Dip the brush in the thick paint & make dots close to one another. You can also use two or more colours in shading (like blue & green in this example)

Mosaic: Geometrical shapes close to one another making a pattern.

Gradation: Using different shades of the same colour side by side to make a pattern. Use white to make light shades & black to make dark shades. Don’t use water for lightning of colour.

Spray Painting: Dip the toothbrush in the colour & spray it on paper by rubbing your thumb against the toothbrush on paper.
You can also draw & cut a design on another rough paper & put it on the new paper & then spray on it. After spraying, remove the rough stencil & you will get a plane shape of your design on the paper surrounded by colourful spray dots.

Water Dots: Firstly make thin colours in the colouring palette. Then apply water onto the design on the paper where you want to use this technique. Dip the brush in color & just touch & leave it on the wet design in a second. The dot will automatically expand. Give more of such dots & make a beautiful pattern.

Seed Shaped Mosaic: Using seed like shapes close to one another making a mosaic pattern.


Tile Mosaic: Using Tile like shapes close to one another making a mosaic pattern.



Hatching: Giving strokes to colourful sketch pens making a hatching pattern



Shading: mixing two colours in each other while painting & showing different shades.



Waves: Painting waves to make a pattern.




Dry Brush: Dip a dry brush in a very thick colour & make a pattern by giving strokes to the brush on the paper



Blade Painting: Cut a blade in 6 pieces. Take one piece & dip the slightly curved part in the paint & score it against the design. Repeat it & make a pattern.



Wax pattern: Draw a design on paper with a wax candle & apply water colour on it. The design drawn with the wax candle will remain uncoloured.



Collage: Painting in a collage like pattern.

STAIN PAINTING

“DAAG ACCHE HAI”--------- (STAINS ARE GOOD}

Hey I’m not doing any washing powder add. I’m talking about color stains on paper.

Stains can be used to make an abstract painting.

What you have to do is just make the paper clumsy by stains.

Don’t do this literally. Follow the instructions.

Instructions:-

1) Put color/ ink drops on the top border of the paper.
    Hold the paper in both your hands in a standing position & let the colors flow to bottom.
2) Sprinkle some color drops on paper
3) Put a big color drop on paper and blow it from the top of the drop. It will spread like a stain.
4) Dip the toothbrush in color and spray it on the paper by rubbing your thumb on the toothbrush
5) Use some imprint drawing tools like ladyfinger/ tree leaves to print its impressions on paper.
6) Use different colors and make an abstract beautiful.

SAND PAINTING

Sand can be a good medium of painting
Material required:-
Paper, glue, different colored sands, Varnish (Optional)
Take Rangoli Powder if you want to keep it simple but if you really want to make real & original sand paintings then go for manual collection of sand like
1) Black farm soil,
2) White Chinese/ multani soil/Chalk powder/ Gypsum Crush/ Plaster of Paris,
3) Red Brick powder,
4) Gray cement/ dust
5) Brown muddy soil
Instructions:-
1) Draw a picture on paper and keep it simple while doing it for the first time
2) Apply glue evenly on the part to be painted. Do it in part by part
3) Sprinkle the sand on glue and fill the glued part with the sand
4) After it gets dried, remove the excess sand on the paper by gently tapping the paper
5) Complete the painting part by part.
6) Spray mixture of 80% glue & 20% water on the picture to get the sand affixed with paper.
7) Allow some time to dry 
8) Apply varnish if you think it fit.

AMBIGRAMS Re-REVEALED

I am passionate about making ambigrams from last 7 years, since I was in school. So i'm feeling really pleased to present you with my passion-art-project on AMBIGRAMS

Ambigram is a form of typography where you can read a same/ sometimes different word in two dimensions, usually when rotated through 180*.
Also known as:
Vertical Palindromes (1965),
Designatures (1979),
Inversions (1980)
This art is a blend of Typography, Symmetry & Optical illusions

In spite of visiting online ambigram generators on the net, I was not satisfied because I failed to get all ambigram characters to allow us to easily create words on our own.

So I decided to make it on my own.

Here I present the chart and the method to use it.

All the charectors in the above chart are designed by me & it took me around a month & a lot of hardwork to complete with it.

*Create your own ambigram

1) Write a word (DHAVAL)

2) Write the same word in reverse order below the 1st word (LAVAHD)
(You can also take the reverse of another word having same no. of alphabets)

3) Make Pairs
(D-L, H-A, A-V, V-A, A-H, L-D)

4) Find the 1st part of the pair in the column & 2nd part in the row
 & note down the Character at the point of intersection (D-L)

5) Do it with all pairs & note all the intersections in the order of pairs.

6) Your ambigram is ready.

Now you can customize & decorate your tattoo using your skills & creativity.

WARLI PAINTING

Warli Painting is a tribal painting art in India

These Paintings are done by Warlis; a tribe in India. These Paintings carry a very basic graphic vocabulary: a circle, a triangle & a square.

Originally Warli paintings are the paintings made by warlis on the walls of their huts,

Using bamboo sticks as a brush,

Wet cow dung as the brown background color of the picture and

Thin rice paste as white color to draw the human, animal or other natural or manmade figures.

However it’s now a globally popular art form from India and many people learn these paintings on paper with normal paint brush & white & brown color.

DOT DRAWING ON GRAPH PAPER

ABHRI PAINTING

I have read this art form many years ago in a kid’s supplement of daily newspaper.

It was named as Abhri Drawing in that article. I searched a lot on internet with this name but couldn’t get anything.

So I don’t know the actual name of this art, but whatever it be, it is marvelous.

After reading the article I immediately tried that and it was a success.

Here are some Abhri patterns that I have made 4 to 5 years ago.

Don’t worry I will explain the process of doing this written in the center of this image in Marathi.

1) Take a flat widespread vessel or a tray filled with water.

2) add some water soluble glue in it [if you have it] or leave this step

3) Sprinkle few drops of oil paint or oil based watercolor in water and let the drops float on
     The surface of water. Don’t steer the colors into the water]

4) Colors will float on water due to oil content

5) In a few seconds, a design like above will be created on the water surface

6) Gently put the paper on water surface [put the drawing side of the page on water]
    And let it be like that for 1-2 minutes

7) Hold two opposite corners of the paper and carefully lift the paper and let it dry completely.

8) Finally you will get a wonderful texture on water imprinted on your paper

9) Use this paper as a base for greeting, origami or for further drawing & gift it to your closer one.

IMPRINT DRAWING

Imprint Drawing is one of the best topics of my interest. It comprises of painting with the impressions of different objects such as onion, ladyfinger, tree leaves, textured cloths like sac/ net etc.

What you have to do is just take an object with which you want to paint, cut it if it’s needful, apply paint to that object and stamp it on the paper. That’s it!!!

You can make Paintings/ Greetings using this Technique or you can also make a texture by repetitive stamping

ORIGAMI

Almost everybody reading this article will be aware of this art as we all have experienced Origami from our playschool and nursery days.

Origami is an art of making articles just by folding, cutting, twisting Paper and it has its roots in Japanese culture.

We can use a newspaper, Xerox paper, marble paper, or tinted marble paper for origami art.

There’s nothing quite like the joy you get from transforming a plain square piece of paper into a container, animal, flower etc.

Origami is fun, easy, inexpensive and great to deal with.
