THE MAGIC OF TANGRAM

Tangram is an early 19th century Chinese dissection puzzle containing 7 flat pieces of cardboard/ plywood/ glass/ canvas/ plastic or any other flat surface making a square

The object of game is to make meaningful shapes by using each of the 7 pieces without overlapping them

Tangram is one of the most popular dissection puzzles in the world.

ORIGAMI

Almost everybody reading this article will be aware of this art as we all have experienced Origami from our playschool and nursery days.

Origami is an art of making articles just by folding, cutting, twisting Paper and it has its roots in Japanese culture.

We can use a newspaper, Xerox paper, marble paper, or tinted marble paper for origami art.

There’s nothing quite like the joy you get from transforming a plain square piece of paper into a container, animal, flower etc.

Origami is fun, easy, inexpensive and great to deal with.

Along with all these arts, I want to share a thing with you. It’s something that interests me.

Normally you have a year’s calendar. But can you imagine the concept of Perpetuity in Calendar

Here I present a chart which will enable you to find the day on the date in any year from 1755 to 2100.

PERPETUAL CALENDAR

* Instructions to Use It:-

1. Find the year that you are interested in below & note the letters in the bold bracket that follows it.

2. Find the letter below &note which number falls under the month you are looking for.

3. Use the calendar that bears the number you found in step 2.

SPIROGRAPH & OTHER DRAWING MACHINES

How many of you have experienced your childhood hours spent with your spirograph set?

Spirgraph is a trademark of a 1960’s plastic toy which is used to draw intricate curved patterns
(hypotrochoids and epitrochoids) using interlocking plastic wheels and toothed rings of different sizes.

We literally can make countless amazing circular patterns by using this toy.

And believe me, it’s not just a kiddy stuff. Even young & old people also love to spend their time with
spirograph. Some people are just mad for this (including me!!!)

These are some patterns I have made with my old spirograph set bought before 5 years from a local
‘Gadda Jatra Fair’ just for Rs.10/- containing only 2 rings & 5 wheels

Take a look at the Spirograph Collage I have made using the same Spirograph set.

For making this collage, I used a local spirograph set containing only 2 rings [144/96 & 150/105] & 5 wheels [Wheel No. 45, 50, 52, 72 & 80]

I used normal writing colour ball pens (8 shades)

After cutting I glued all the patterns on a reflective surface.

It took me around a week to complete with it on 2-3 hours a day basis.

The Spirograph sets are very common and you can get them from e-business sites like Amazon.com etc.

We draw many pictures & designs as a part of our hobby manually with our hands. But there are also
some drawing machines for making typical designs, graphs & roulette curves.

Geometry Box

Not to mention, we all know using these basic geometric drawing tools like D, compass, ruler, triangles & Pro circle from school days.

Though simple in nature, these equipments have a lot of importance in technical & mathematical drawing/ Diagrams.

Spirograph

The same tool mentioned above.

A trademark of a 1960’s plastic toy which is used to draw intricate curved patterns (hypotrochoids and epitrochoids) using interlocking plastic wheels and toothed rings of different sizes.

Harmonograph

A mechanical apparatus, that employs pendulums to create complex geometric images.

I searched on net but failed to get the simple, understandable & cheapest procedure to make a small sized & portable harmonograph toy


Pintograph

A specific type of harmonograph based on the rotation of two wheels.

It is an instrument which uses rotating disks instead of pendulums to create complex geometric images.

Guilloche

These are the most complex intrinsic roulette curves 

These patterns are used in printing of currency notes, bonds, degree certificates, passports etc to stop forgery. For more information on guilloche, go to http://www.guard-soft.com/ (Guilloche Liabrary). It has hundreds if ready to use guilloche patterns and softwares.

PHOTO-COLLAGE

Collage is a technique of an art production where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.

It may include magazine and newspaper clippings/ colored patches, ribbons, paint, bits of colored and handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photos and other objects glued to a piece of paper or canvas in a pleasant and decorative way.

Collage Gift: You can make a photo collage of your close one’s photos and give him a surprise on any special occasion like his/ her birthday/ Marriage anniversary or you may also give a photo collage made from the photos of the memorable moments you have spent together to your friend or spouse on friendship day or may be on Valentine’s Day.

You can make handmade collage or digital collage using photo editing software, apps or tools but it will give others great pleasure getting a handmade collage from you. 

Look at the Digital Floral Photo-collage I  made from the photos clicked in Prayag (Allahabad) 

during the holly trip to Shri Sammedshikharji; A Jain Pilgrimage Site in Jharkhand, India.

You also can create such piece of work and spread a sweetest smile on your close one’s face by gifting it to him/ her.

PHOTOGRAPHY- FROM THE LENS

Period: Jan - Feb 2013

I was going to a holly family trip to Shri Sammedshikharji ; a jain pilgrimage site in Jharkhand ( India ). We traveled about 30 places in the 5 states of India in 20 days.

I had my cousin's camera with me & it was enough to develop a new fad; the fad of photography.

I clicked about 700 photographs during the trip. Some selective of them are arranged in this video.

COFFEE PAINTING

Have you ever even thought about using nice, warm, aromatic coffee in your mug to paint a picture?

Coffee painting can make that no other medium can.

The texture of coffee is a challenge. It has more elastic properties than a normal paint. It is stickier when you apply it with brush.

Lets make it together.

Materials Required:-

Instant Coffee Powder
Paper
3D Gold Liner (Optional)
Brush
Plain Varnish (Optional)

How to do it ?

1) Draw a Picture or a design on paper and outline it with 3D Gold liner

2) Mix Coffee Powder in water in different quantities to get different shades of colors
    (Pale yellow to brown)

3) Color the picture in different shades made with coffee.

4) Once the whole painting dried give on it a plain varnish coating to protect your painting from the dust.

5) That's it, you are ready with a pleasing coffee painting.

INKPEN PAINTING

Unlike pencil sketches we can also make sketches using pens ( inkpen/ ballpen)

However, this is not much popular or widely scoped art. Bur for fun, we can definately try it.

Take a look at the ink pen & ball pen painting techniques.

INSTRUCTIONS:-

A) Give ink dots/ dashes/ stars on paper with ink & immediately spread them to form designs

B) Draw a picture by inkpen on wet paper.

C) Make textures by using ball pen linings & techniques like hatching.

INK PAINTING WITH THREAD

1) Dip a thread in ink bottle & place it on paper on witch you have to make a design in one of the given shapes.

2) Be sure that one end of the thread comes outside the paper.

3) Place another rough paper on it to cover the thread except its outer end.

4) Place your hand on the upper paper & apply some pressure.

5) Hold the outer end of the thread by other hand & pull the thread out of the two papers.

6) Remove upper rough paper & the design is ready.

PENCIL SHADING

Pencil Shading is a subject which is known to almost everyone.

All of us have tried it at least once in our life till now, may be from the day when we learnt to hold the pencil correctly in our tiny hands.

It’s just a technique of using a pencil for drawing as well as painting.

However the question of its simplicity or complexity depends on the skills possessed by the artist.
